Thomson Symbio’s whimsical shape more impressive than its dual functions

thomson_symbio.jpgKeep this Thomson Symbio phone next to your bed, and it’ll play you music and wake you up in addition to making Internet phone calls. The VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) phone wirelessly connects to a service such as Skype via your home network, and also tunes into thousands of Internet radio stations, playing them back on its two speakers nestled within either side of the handset.

We’re fond of its design that lampoons the shape of old-fashioned phones, but it’s the quality of its functions that might be problematic. If our experiences with VoIP telephony are any indication, its phone calling will be second-rate at best, and with those two microscopic speakers, that music might sound unacceptably tinny. Even so, it might be an attractive addition to your boudoir, waking you up with style. Probably available in Europe first, no pricing was announced yet.
